Monumental

Taken just after a flash hail storm at the Stones of Stenness, you can see it leaving on the left of the frame.

As some of you may know I have more than just a passing interest in prehistory, so the Orkney Islands with their rich Neolithic past intrgue me. The Stones of Stenness are thought to be one of the oldest Neolithic monuments in the UK, predating Stonehenge.

Only 4 of the orginal 12 stones exist, with a 'hearth' in the center. It is less less than 1 mile from the Ring of Brodgar and directly opposite the Neolithic village of Barnhouse, with the likes of Skara Brae and Maes Howe also close by.
